Criminal Past

Diabolical. Fucking diabolical this book.

Lets first talk about Hazard and Somerset. You’d think, after all this time spent together and all this time being together they’d actually know how to communicate. But no, that would be too hard, right? I have to say, they did a little (emphasis on the little) bit better than the other books.

The amount of times I wanted to lock them in a room so that they’d actually TALK. These two take miscommunication to a new level.

Other then the miscommunication, I loved them together. They fit each other like puzzle pieces. They know each other inside and out. They’ve seen the good and the bad and the ugly of each other and they love each other to death.

At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about Hazard calling Somers “John”, but now I absolutely love it so much. I love every single time Hazard calls Somers “John”. It just feels so intimate, as if they are the only two in the room, as if you can feel the love between them. God, that’s what a nickname is supposed to be. That’s how you find a nickname for couple. If you’re writing a book with a couple in it, take notes. Because that’s how you find and integrate a nickname into the plot.

I didn’t bother trying to understand the plot. There’s a reason I don’t like mysteries and this series has just solidified it for me.

But if you love a good complicated mystery, this would be for you!

I enjoy a horror book. I like reading horror books. But holy fuck, those last 100 pages. I had to put the book down several times. I couldn’t. I wanted to chuck the phone against the wall several times and I was seriously considering it.

Maybe it was because Hazard didn’t know what was happening and he wasn’t looking for Somers and he was continuing working like nothing was up, and Somers was there being tortured and no one was coming for him

But those last 100 pages could be a separate book and labeled “horror”.

An amazing book that will drag you through the depths of emotions and you’ll come out a mess, but you’ll come out.

[SPOILERS BELOW]

They also never had a third act breakup throughout the whole series – which is an incredible feat. I’ve read standalone romances with third act breakups over so much less then the shit Hazard and Somers go through. So I have to give them that. And in some moments, that was my saving grace: that they wouldn’t break up, they couldn’t, because I know them and I know they’ll fix it before it gets too hard. Doesn’t mean it didn’t put me through the ringer though.
But how is it that they can say I love you hundreds of time, and THEY STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT. Somers, you fucker, when are you going to believe that Hazard has forgiven you ages ago????? Hazard, when are you going to believe that Somers has chosen you??? And of course you only talk about it at the last 5 pages. I swear to god if those issues come up again in the next series I will lose it (If I ever read it because after the shit this series has put me through I don’t know if I ever will (who am I kidding, I probably will once I miss them too much)).

I did know that the mayor was always the bad guy, give me that

Maybe it was because I read so much about Hazard and Somers I felt a connection to them.
